OLYMPIC BARBELLS BEST HOME GYM OPTIONS

If you’re building a home gym, a barbell is the single best investment you can make. But with so many options out there, it’s hard to know what you’re actually buying. I’ve tested a few, made some expensive mistakes, and this is what I’ve learned.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD OLYMPIC BARBELL?

Not all barbells are equal. Here’s what actually matters when choosing one for a home gym.

  • Tensile strength — minimum 150,000 PSI for serious lifting. Cheap bars bend and never recover.
  • Whip — how much the bar flexes. More whip for Olympic lifts, less for powerlifting.
  • Knurling — the grip pattern. Medium knurling is best for general training.
  • Sleeve spin — bearings vs bushings. Bushings are fine for most home gym lifters.
  • Bar weight — standard Olympic bar is 20kg (men) or 15kg (women).

BUDGET OPTIONS

Under £150

Mirafit M1 Olympic Barbell

~£80–£100

Great entry-level bar for home gym lifters. Does what it says, won’t bend under normal loads.

PROS

  • ✓ Good value
  • ✓ Decent knurling
  • ✓ 150k PSI tensile strength

CONS

  • ✗ Sleeve spin could be better
  • ✗ Not for competitive use

Verdict: Solid starter bar. If you’re new to lifting or on a tight budget, this is where I’d start.

Body Power Olympic Bar

~£70–£90

Widely available in the UK, decent quality for the price.

PROS

  • ✓ Easy to find in UK
  • ✓ Budget friendly

CONS

  • ✗ Lower tensile strength
  • ✗ Basic knurling

Verdict: Acceptable for light to moderate training. Upgrade when your lifts get serious.

MID-RANGE OPTIONS

£150–£300

Mirafit M2 Competition Bar

~£150–£180

Excellent knurling, 190k PSI tensile strength, and smooth sleeve spin.

PROS

  • ✓ 190k PSI tensile strength
  • ✓ Excellent knurling
  • ✓ Good sleeve spin

CONS

  • ✗ Price jump from M1
  • ✗ Aggressive knurling not for everyone

Verdict: My top recommendation at this price. The knurling is confident without being brutal.

Wolverson Olympic Barbell

~£200–£250

UK-made barbell with brilliant build quality and great sleeve spin.

PROS

  • ✓ UK made
  • ✓ Brilliant quality
  • ✓ Great sleeve spin

CONS

  • ✗ Higher price point
  • ✗ Can sell out quickly

Verdict: If you can stretch the budget, the Wolverson is exceptional. Built to last decades.

MY RECOMMENDATION

WHAT I’D BUY TODAY

For most home gym lifters in the UK, I’d go with the Wolverson Olympic Barbell or the Mirafit M2. If you’re just starting out, the Mirafit M1 is perfectly fine until you’re ready to invest more.
