I don't hand out owned-and-used badges for things I haven't done. I haven't run this yet. This guide was written before I go — checked against the organiser and the official site. It gets a first-hand rewrite, with my own photos, after 13 September 2026.
Most British runners have never once thought of Sarajevo as a race weekend. That is exactly why it is worth writing about. It is a flat, certified half marathon through a small, walkable European capital, it costs less than a pair of carbon-plated shoes, and you can be there in under three hours from London. It is also a city that wears its history in plain sight, and it will change how a Sunday long run feels.
There is a personal reason this page reads differently from the rest of the site. My family is from Bosnia — my grandfather came from near Banja Luka — and running this race is, for me, going back to run in the country he came from. I am led by family and belonging here, not by nation.

Everything below is checked against the organiser and the official race site, with one honest catch on every recommendation. Start anywhere — but if you're planning the trip rather than browsing it, go in order.
Two flat, certified laps through Novo Sarajevo and along the Miljacka. What you run past, where the water is, and why the old town isn't on it.
No ballot — you register and you're in. The fee ladder, the deadlines, the club discount and what's in the race pack.
£310–510 all in, itemised. Which airline flies which days, the airport, and the order to book it in.
Where to sleep on the one walkable strip, the four places to eat, and what happened on the streets you're running.
The honest catches, a September packing list, and every practical question answered plainly.
The Persil Sarajevo Half Marathon is organised by NGO Marathon Sarajevo, a non-profit that has run events in the city since 2007 — chip-timed, IAAF/AIMS certified, with a 3-hour cut-off and a minimum age of 14. Start and finish are at Marijin Dvor, on Zmaja od Bosne. Two laps, fast and flat, running through Novo Sarajevo and along the Miljacka river — a genuinely good option if you're chasing a half marathon personal best rather than just a stamp in the passport.
On the same morning there's a 5K, capped at 600 runners — the sensible choice if you're travelling with a partner or family who don't want 21km. (There's also a 10K Night Run, but that's held in July, not this weekend — ignore it for a September trip.)

2025 participation figures confirmed directly with NGO Marathon Sarajevo, the race organiser — attributed to them rather than to the website.
Good coffee for a pound, a full dinner for the price of a London pint. The weekend costs less than the shoes you'll run it in.
You will not struggle to order, ask directions, or find your way — and, as the numbers above show, you won't be the only British accent on the start line either.
Rebuilt façades next to buildings still marked, kids on scooters where the boulevard was deadly. It is moving without asking you to perform being moved.
You want a flat, certified half inside a proper city break.
You like the idea of a race weekend that costs less than your trainers.
You're bringing a club (20% off for 10+) or a non-racing partner (there's a 5K).
The history and the place mean something to you.
You specifically need a marathon.
You can only travel on days the direct flights don't run and don't fancy a connection.
You want a 40,000-runner big-city atmosphere. This is a well-run mid-size half, not London.
