The Myth That Keeps Women On The Treadmill And Off The Weight Rack — And What The Hormones Actually Do

Walk into almost any gym and you’ll see it: the cardio machines full, the weights rack quiet, and a lot of women who’ll tell you, if you ask, that they’re ‘avoiding getting bulky.’ I believed the same thing for years before I ever picked up a barbell.

It turns out that fear is doing a lot of work for very little physiological reason. The hormone responsible for significant muscle bulk is present in women at a fraction of the level it is in men — and the research comparing how men and women actually respond to the same strength training doesn’t show the dramatic difference the myth assumes.

A 2020 meta-analysis pooling data across multiple resistance training studies found no significant difference in muscle hypertrophy between men and women following the same training protocol. Same programme, same relative muscle growth. Let’s go through why the fear doesn’t match the biology.

WHERE THIS MYTH CAME FROM

A real hormone, applied to the wrong assumption.

The fear isn’t built from nothing. Testosterone genuinely is the primary hormone driving significant muscle hypertrophy, and men do have dramatically more of it — that part of the myth is accurate. The error is in what gets assumed next: that any amount of resistance training will push women toward the same outcome, just on a slower timeline.

That’s not how the hormone actually behaves. It isn’t a dial that goes up proportionally with training volume — it’s a baseline physiological ceiling. Women aren’t doing a slower version of the same process men go through. They’re working with a fundamentally different hormonal environment, which produces a fundamentally different, and far more limited, ceiling for muscle size.

The images that reinforce the myth — competitive female bodybuilders with dramatic muscularity — are also not a random sample of ‘women who lifted weights.’ They represent years of specialised, high-volume training, deliberately structured caloric surpluses, and often additional interventions most gym-goers never touch. Seeing the extreme outcome and assuming it’s the default result of picking up a dumbbell is the same reasoning error the running-injury myths on this site keep running into.

WHAT THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SHOWS

Same training protocol, same relative muscle growth.

A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research directly compared how young to middle-aged men and women respond to identical resistance training protocols. Across 12 hypertrophy outcomes from 10 studies, there was no significant difference in muscle growth between the sexes (effect size 0.07, essentially zero). Relative upper-body strength gains actually favoured women in that analysis.

A more recent Bayesian meta-analysis pooling 29 studies refined this further: absolute increases in muscle size slightly favoured men, but relative increases — percentage growth from each person’s own starting point — were statistically similar between sexes. In other words, women build muscle at close to the same relative rate as men. Men simply start with more baseline mass to grow from, since postpubescent males have roughly tenfold higher testosterone and correspondingly larger baseline muscle cross-sectional area.

To put a number on that starting gap: in untrained and resistance-trained individuals, women’s biceps and quadriceps cross-sectional area sits at roughly 50–60% and 70–80% of men’s respectively. That’s the baseline difference the myth is quietly reacting to — not evidence that lifting itself pushes women toward bulk.

HOW MUCH MUSCLE CAN WOMEN ACTUALLY BUILD?

Slower, smaller, and entirely optional to stop.

Even under ideal conditions — structured programming, adequate protein, consistent training — realistic muscle gain for a beginner woman tends to land around 0.5–1 lb (roughly 0.2–0.5kg) per month, slowing to a fraction of that as training experience increases. That’s the pace of visible, deliberate hypertrophy training. It is not what happens by accident from a few sessions a week of general strength work.

Building a visibly ‘bulky’ physique on top of that also requires a deliberate caloric surplus — eating more than you burn, specifically to fuel growth — sustained over a long period, alongside high training volume aimed specifically at maximum size. Most people strength training a few times a week, eating at maintenance, are nowhere near that combination of variables, regardless of sex.

None of this happens by surprise. It requires a specific, sustained set of choices that are simple to avoid entirely if size isn’t your goal — and simple to pursue deliberately if it is.

You cannot accidentally out-eat, out-train and out-hormone your way into a physique that took someone else a decade to build on purpose.

WHY IT’S WORTH LIFTING ANYWAY

The benefits show up long before any ‘bulk’ ever could.

Resistance training has a strong, specific evidence base for bone health in women — particularly relevant given accelerated bone loss after menopause. A meta-analysis of postmenopausal women found resistance training significantly improved bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, and a separate meta-analysis of controlled trials found resistance training had a positive effect on bone density across pre- and postmenopausal women at multiple skeletal sites.

Beyond bone health, the practical effects most people actually notice first are strength, posture, metabolic health, and what’s often described as a ‘toned’ look — which is really just visible muscle with a normal, healthy layer of body fat over it, not a separate physiological process from building muscle. There is no such thing as toning a muscle without building it; the two are the same adaptation described with two different words.

THREE THINGS PEOPLE MISTAKE FOR ‘BULK’

1. Short-term water retention.

Starting a new training programme, especially with creatine or a higher-carbohydrate intake, can cause a few days of water retention that makes muscles look temporarily fuller. It settles within one to two weeks and has nothing to do with permanent muscle growth.

2. Post-workout muscle swelling.

The pump you feel immediately after a session — blood and fluid drawn into the working muscle — fades within hours. It is not a preview of your long-term physique.

3. Muscle simply looking different from fat.

Muscle is denser than fat and sits differently under the skin. Building some while losing fat can change your shape noticeably without adding significant overall size — which is usually the actual result people are hoping for when they say they want to ‘tone up,’ not avoid.

SO SHOULD YOU BE AFRAID OF THE WEIGHTS RACK?

No. The physiology that would need to align for ‘accidental bulk’ to happen — high testosterone, a sustained caloric surplus, high training volume, and years of consistency — simply isn’t what happens from a normal strength training routine a few times a week.

What you get instead, backed by the actual research, is more strength, denser bones, a body that holds its shape better as you age, and the physique most people describe wanting when they say ‘toned’ — without ever needing to worry it will run away from you by accident.

Bulk is a deliberate decade, not an accidental Tuesday.
