Every guide on this site starts with a disclosure, and this one's is the simplest yet: I was born on the plain below this mountain. Vojvodina is flat the way the sea is flat — and out of all that flatness rises exactly one long, forested ridge. Fruška Gora was the first mountain I ever saw, because it was the only one there was to see. Millions of years ago it really was an island, in the Pannonian Sea that covered the plain; it has never quite stopped being one.
On 24 April 2027, that ridge hosts the 50th Fruškogorski maraton — the jubilee edition of what the organisers rightly call the oldest event of its kind in Europe, run every year without a break for half a century. It is not one race. It is fourteen routes leaving one start line at nine in the morning: five of them ITRA-certified trail races from 22km to a 134km ultra, and nine of them non-competitive hiking routes where half of Vojvodina turns out to walk. Thirty-plus nations have taken part, and the whole thing costs less than a British parkrun t-shirt.
This is also this site's first trail guide, so let me set the terms honestly: this is not a road race with mountains in the background. You navigate by red hearts painted on trees, you carry your own supplies between checkpoints, and the organiser's budget is a rounding error next to a city marathon's. What you get instead is the thing money can't organise — and I have waited a long time to write this page.

Every figure checked against the official race site and confirmed directly with the race director in Novi Sad. Start with the trails — on this event, choosing your route is the whole decision.
Fourteen routes from a family stroll to a 134km ultra — the five ITRA races, the nine hiking routes, and how to pick yours.
From £9 for the hiking routes to £52 for the big ultra — three price waves, and the one route that costs nothing at all.
The cheapest weekend on this site: Belgrade flights, the hop to Novi Sad, and the race bus that leaves at six.
My home ground: Novi Sad or Sremski Karlovci, the wine the Titanic story clings to, the monasteries, and what to taste.
Semi-autonomy, the hearts on the trees, April mud, and every practical question answered plainly.
The Fruškogorski maraton has been organised from Novi Sad every spring since 1978 — through every decade and every upheaval since, without missing a year. It began as a hikers' gathering and grew into something with no exact equivalent anywhere: a trail-running race and a mass mountain walk sharing one start line, one network of 220km of marked paths, and 24 checkpoints across a wooded national park — Serbia's oldest, protected since 1960.
Everything starts together on the Saturday morning at Popovica, on the Novi Sad side of the mountain. The 22km and 42km runners are home for lunch. The 59km runners see most of the ridge. And the 107km and 134km ultras run on through the night into Sunday — which is why the weekend has two dates but one start.

Sources: fruskogorski-maraton.com, checked August 2026; route count, certification and character confirmed directly with Nenad Sudarov, race director. Note: the official site shows the weekend as 24–25 April; one banner still says 25–26 — the director confirms Saturday 24 April, 09:00.
The routes follow a marking you will not forget: a white circle with a red heart in the middle, painted on the trees, with canvas signs and road markings where the forest breaks. Follow the hearts. It sounds like a fairy tale and it is simply how it works.
The nine FUN routes fill with families, pensioners, and whole school classes — thousands of them, out for the day. You will be racing through the middle of the region's biggest annual walk, and the atmosphere is the better for it.
A tenner for a marked, checkpointed day on a mountain. The big ultra at the first wave costs less than most British 10Ks. And one route — the Staza radosti i zadovoljstva, the trail of joy and pleasure — is free, on principle.
You want your first trail race — the 22km with 898m of climb is a proper, honest introduction.
You collect ITRA points and like the idea of a 134km ultra that costs €60.
You're bringing family — the hiking routes mean everyone is on the mountain, not waiting at a finish line.
You want spring forest, wine villages and monasteries around your race, for less than any weekend on this site.
You want a supported road race. This is semi-autonomous trail: you carry, you navigate, you manage yourself.
You need big-event polish. The organisers are honest that their budget is nothing like a city marathon's — and say so themselves.
You want crowds cheering your name. You get forest, birdsong, and hikers wishing you srećno instead.
Mud offends you. It is April, in a forest, in the Balkans.
