Myth Busted
It is printed on the treadmill. It has its own button. Your watch draws it in a different colour. And it is the only fitness myth I know of that is technically true and completely useless at the same time.

I spent most of one winter on a treadmill with my hand on the rail, watching a little graphic tell me I was in the fat burning zone. I kept my heart rate exactly where the machine wanted it. I did this three times a week for about four months and I was, at the end of it, almost precisely the same.
What annoyed me later was not that I had been lied to. The zone exists. That is what makes this myth so sticky — the physiology underneath it is genuinely correct, and it has a proper name.
It is called the crossover concept. At rest and at very low effort your body runs mostly on fat. As intensity climbs it shifts progressively toward carbohydrate, because carbohydrate can be broken down faster. Somewhere in between, the actual rate of fat burning peaks — researchers call this point Fatmax, and across the literature it usually lands somewhere around 60 to 65% of VO₂ max. Past roughly 85%, fat oxidation approaches zero.
So there really is an intensity at which you burn fat fastest. Everything printed on the machine is broadly accurate. The trouble is what people did with that fact.
Look at the top row. The brisk walk has the highest percentage of fat of anything on this table — it is the truest fat burning zone here by the machine's own logic. It also burns the least fat of any option on the list.

The easy jog burns 44% more fat than the walk while being in a worse fat burning zone. The hard intervals are the worst zone by percentage and burn the most total calories of all — which, as we will get to, is the number that actually decides what happens to your body.
This is the entire myth in one table. Percentage is a ratio. Fat loss is an amount. You cannot eat a percentage.

Even the table above understates the problem, because it treats the workout as though it exists in isolation. It does not.
Fat loss is not decided during the half hour you are exercising. It is decided across the whole day — and the whole week — by whether you took in less energy than you used. If you burn mostly carbohydrate during a run, your body simply burns more fat afterwards to balance the books. Substrate use during a single session is a temporary accounting decision, not a verdict.
Which is why the practical question was never “which fuel am I using right now”. It was always: how much energy did I move today, and can I sustain doing that?
Seen that way, the fat burning zone advice does something genuinely counterproductive. It tells people to go slower and easier in order to lose fat, when going slightly harder for the same duration would move more energy. It is, as far as I can tell, the only piece of fitness advice ever printed on a machine that encourages you to do less of what the machine is for.

Every fat burn zone on every treadmill and most watches is calculated from your maximum heart rate. Your maximum heart rate is almost never measured. It is estimated, usually from 220 minus your age.
That formula was never the product of rigorous research. It was a rough approximation drawn from a handful of studies and popularised in the early 1970s, and it has a standard deviation of roughly 10 to 12 beats per minute. For a 40-year-old told her maximum is 180, the true figure could plausibly sit anywhere between about 158 and 202.

Both are told the same target range by the same machine. One is working considerably harder than she thinks, the other considerably less.
A better equation exists — Tanaka's, derived from a meta-analysis of 351 studies and over 18,000 people, giving 208 minus 0.7 times your age. It reduces the error but does not remove it. A zone built on an estimate of an estimate is not a precision instrument. It is a decorated guess, and people have organised years of training around it.

“But the afterburn makes up for it.” It is real, it has a proper name — excess post-exercise oxygen consumption — and it is much smaller than the internet believes. Across the research it typically adds somewhere around 7% of the session's calories, with a range of roughly 6 to 15% for very hard work. Burn 500 calories in an hour and the afterburn contributes perhaps 35 more. Worth having. Not worth planning around, and nowhere near the 48-hour furnace it is often sold as.
“But fasted cardio burns more fat.” During the session, yes — measurably. Over time it appears to make no difference at all. In a controlled trial, twenty young women on the same calorie-restricted diet did four weeks of matched aerobic exercise, half fasted and half after a meal. Both groups lost fat. The difference between them was not statistically significant. The fasted group burned more fat during the run and less afterwards, and the ledger balanced.
Both of these are the same error as the zone itself, in a smaller costume: a real physiological observation, correctly measured, applied to the wrong timescale.
Section 05 · Five Things Worth Knowing
Think about what a fat burn setting does commercially. It reassures a beginner that the easiest programme on the machine is the optimal one, which makes the machine feel achievable, which sells machines and memberships. It is not a conspiracy and nobody is lying — the physiology on the label is accurate. But no gym has ever put a button on a treadmill that says go a bit harder and stay longer, and that is closer to the truth.
Fatmax is not a fixed heart rate you can print on a chart. Training shifts it — fitter people burn fat at higher absolute and relative intensities, and endurance training raises maximal fat oxidation substantially. So even if you accepted the whole premise, the number on the wall chart would be wrong for you within a few months of following it.
Here is the irony. A genuinely easy conversational run — the kind every good training plan says should make up around 80% of your running — sits comfortably in or near the fat burning zone by accident. You do not need the button. If you run easy most of the time because it builds your aerobic base, you get the zone thrown in free, and for reasons that actually matter.
A session burning 300 calories is undone by a flapjack, and this is not a moral failing — harder exercise genuinely does increase appetite in some people. That is a real effect worth planning around. But it is an argument about food and recovery, not an argument for going slower. The answer to exercise makes me hungry is not exercise less usefully.
If the easy, low intensity session is the one you will actually do three times a week for a year, then do that one — not because it is the fat burning zone, but because it is the one that survives December. The best intensity for fat loss is the one you will still be doing next spring. That is the only genuinely useful thing the zone ever pointed at, and it pointed at it by accident.
The Bottom Line
The fat burning zone is a real physiological phenomenon that answers a question nobody needed answered. Yes, there is an intensity at which the proportion of fat in your fuel mix peaks. No, sitting in it does not make you lose more fat — because fat loss is settled by total energy across days and weeks, not by the fuel mix of a single half hour.

So run easy most of the time, because it builds your aerobic base and because you can recover from it. Run hard occasionally, because that is where the adaptations live. Eat enough protein. Sleep. And ignore the graphic on the console entirely — it is calculated from a formula that could be twelve beats wrong in either direction, describing a ratio that does not determine the outcome.
I gave that treadmill four months. What eventually changed things was running outside, three times a week, mostly easy, for considerably longer than four months — and paying attention to what I ate rather than to what colour the little bar was.
