TIPS & FAQ

THE PRACTICAL QUESTIONS, answered plainly.

Everything a British road runner tends to ask before their first marked, semi-autonomous trail event — answered by someone who grew up under this mountain, with the honest catches listed rather than buried.

THE CATCH

WHAT'S NOT PERFECT ABOUT IT.

You are on your own between checkpoints. Twenty-four control points, and not all carry food or water. This is by design and clearly stated — but if you have never carried your own race, start with the 22km.

The organisation is volunteers, not a corporation. The race director said it himself: nothing like a city marathon's budget. Expect paint, canvas and people who have done this for fifty years — not an expo village.

April in a Pannonian forest means mud. Vojvodina's spring is mild — roughly 8–19°C — but the week's rain lives in the trails. Road shoes will be comedy by kilometre three.

The website is mostly Serbian-first. An English version exists and the organisers answer email warmly, but expect to translate the odd page. Consider this guide the bridge.

The site currently shows two different date banners (24–25 and 25–26 April). The race director confirms Saturday 24 April, 09:00 — but glance at the official site before booking flights, as always.

WHAT TO PACK

PACKING FOR AN APRIL TRAIL DAY.

Mild days, cool starts, wet ground. Pack for the forest floor, not the forecast.

On your feet & back

Trail shoes with real lugs — the single non-negotiable item.

A running vest or small pack: water, food, waterproof, phone. Semi-autonomy is literal.

A light waterproof even on a blue morning — April changes its mind by noon.

Headtorch plus spare batteries on the 107km and 134km — you will meet the night.

Navigation & admin

The GPS track of your route downloaded before you leave wifi — the hearts are good, but redundancy is better.

Passport for entry to Serbia; your registration confirmation for the start pack.

Cash in dinars for village stalls and checkpoint-adjacent ice cream.

Travel insurance that explicitly covers trail running.

Comfort & sense

Kulen, cheese and bread in the pack beats gels on a course like this — run like a local.

A dry top and socks for the finish at Popovica.

Sun cream — the ridge-top meadows are exposed even in April.

Room in your bag for wine and honey. You have been warned about both.

FREQUENTLY ASKED.

Is this a race or a walk?

Both, at the same time, and that is the charm. Five ITRA-certified races (SPORT) and nine hiking routes (FUN) share the start, the trails and the checkpoints. Pick your route →

I've only run road marathons. Which route?

The 22km. It carries 898m of climbing — a real trail day, not a soft option — but it is marked, checkpointed, and home by lunch. The 42km if your long runs are honest and your shoes have lugs.

What does semi-autonomous actually mean?

You carry your own water, food and waterproof between checkpoints, because not all 24 of them serve refreshments. Passage is stamped at each; the gaps are yours to manage.

Will I get lost?

Genuinely unlikely: the markings — a white circle with a red heart — are a fifty-year-old system, reinforced with canvas signs, and GPS tracks are published for every route. Download yours anyway.

Can I enter on the day?

The hiking routes, yes — at Popovica on the morning, £13 (€15). The five races, no — SPORT entry is online only and closes 15 April.

How do I get to the start without a car?

Organised transport leaves Novi Sad from 06:00 on race morning — arrange it when you register. Popovica is 16km from the city; a pre-booked taxi is the fallback.

Is there a cut-off?

Time controls exist on the long routes and are published in the rules for each — check your route's page when you enter. The hiking routes are about the day, not the clock.

What is the weather like in late April?

Vojvodina spring: roughly 8°C at the start, high teens by afternoon, with rain always possible and the forest holding last week's. Ideal walking, honest running.

Do I need to speak Serbian?

No — though on this event, more of the day happens in Serbian than in Sarajevo or Belgrade. The organisers answer email in English, the site has an English version, and a smile plus hvala covers the trail. Half the hikers will adopt you regardless.

Is it worth staying past the race?

This is my home ground, so discount me accordingly — but yes, more than anywhere on this site for the money. Karlovci, the monasteries and the fortress are all within half an hour. The Vojvodina page →
