BOXING · TRAINING · GEAR
Real boxing training, honest gear reviews and technique breakdowns — from someone who actually spars 2x a week with Venum gloves.
BOXING FUNDAMENTALS
Whether you’re stepping into a gym for the first time or setting up a bag at home — here’s everything you need to know to start training like a fighter. No experience needed.
FOUNDATION
Your stance is everything. Feet shoulder-width apart, lead foot forward, weight on the balls of your feet. Learn to move before you throw a single punch.
TECHNIQUE
Jab, cross, hook, uppercut — master these four punches and you have the full toolkit. Start slow, focus on form. Speed comes with time.
FITNESS
Boxing is 80% cardio. Jump rope, shadowboxing, bag work and sparring will build a fitness level like nothing else. Start with 3 rounds of 3 minutes.
WEEKLY STRUCTURE
3 days per week is all you need to start. This is the exact structure I used when I started — works around a full-time job and family life.
MONDAY
LOWWarm up, footwork drills, shadowboxing 4×3 min. Focus on form not speed.
WEDNESDAY
MEDIUMHeavy bag work. Practice jab-cross-hook combinations. 6×3 min rounds.
FRIDAY
HIGHLight sparring if available, or full conditioning circuit. Finish with jump rope.
PRO TIP
Never skip the warm-up. 10 minutes of jump rope and shadowboxing before every session prevents injury and sharpens your timing.
ESSENTIAL GEAR
You don’t need to spend a fortune to start. Here’s the gear that actually matters — tested and used by real boxers. Amazon UK affiliate links included.
ESSENTIAL · BEGINNER
16oz gloves for bag work and sparring. Venum Contender is the best value at this price point — proper wrist support, quality leather.
ESSENTIAL · PROTECTION
Never hit a bag without wraps. 4.5m cotton wraps protect your knuckles and wrist joints. Always wrap before you glove up.
ESSENTIAL · CONDITIONING
10 minutes of jump rope = 1 mile of running for cardio. Speed rope builds timing, footwork and conditioning all at once.
HOME GYM · INVESTMENT
A 40kg heavy bag is the best home gym investment for boxers. Freestanding bags work if you can't drill into walls.
ESSENTIAL · SPARRING
Required for any sparring session. Shock Doctor or Venum — both under £20 and both do the job. Don't skip this.
UPGRADE · FOOTWORK
Once you're training 3x a week, proper shoes make a real difference. Lighter than trainers, better ankle support and pivot.
MYTH BUSTING
The fitness world is full of boxing myths that keep people from training. We’re calling them out one by one.
MYTH BUSTED
Boxing doesn't create aggression — it channels it. Women who train consistently report lower stress, better emotional control, and more confidence. The science backs it up.

Too old, too unfit, too scared — we've heard every excuse. Boxing has no age limit, no fitness prerequisite, and no barrier to entry. If you can move, you can box.

You don't need to spar to box. Bag work, pad work and shadowboxing are zero-contact and still give you the full fitness and skill benefits.
