You need access to a commercial gym with lots of machines and equipment to build real strength.

โœ“ THE TRUTH

A barbell, some dumbbells and a bench is all you need. My home gym cost less than 6 months of gym membership and I’m stronger than ever.

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED

The most effective strength exercises require minimal equipment:

  • โ†’Squat โ€” barbell or dumbbells. The king of lower body exercises.
  • โ†’Deadlift โ€” barbell or dumbbells. Best full body strength builder.
  • โ†’Bench Press โ€” barbell or dumbbells + bench. Primary push movement.
  • โ†’Row โ€” barbell or dumbbells. Primary pull movement.
  • โ†’Overhead Press โ€” barbell or dumbbells. Shoulder strength and stability.
  • โ†’Pull-Ups โ€” a doorframe pull-up bar costs ยฃ20. Best back exercise there is.

MY HOME GYM SETUP

This is everything I use for my 3x weekly lifting sessions:

  • โ†’Olympic barbell โ€” Mirafit M2, ~ยฃ160
  • โ†’Weight plates โ€” rubber bumper plates, ~ยฃ120
  • โ†’Adjustable bench โ€” Mirafit, ~ยฃ80
  • โ†’Dumbbells โ€” Rubber hex set (5kgโ€“20kg), ~ยฃ150
  • โ†’12kg kettlebell โ€” Mirafit cast iron, ~ยฃ25
  • โ†’Pull-up bar โ€” doorframe mounted, ~ยฃ20
  • โ†’Total cost โ€” ~ยฃ555. Less than 6 months at most gyms.
