THE 2ND EUROPEAN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

RUN FOR YOURSELF. Count for your country.

Most championships are something you watch. This one you can enter.

The European Running Championships are European Athletics' newest event — the first edition was held in Belgium in April 2025 — and they are built on one radical idea: the elites and the public run the same races, on the same course, on the same day, and the results are scored together. Belgrade 2027 is the second edition, folded into the 40th Belgrade Marathon.

That means an ordinary British runner — you, with an online entry and no qualifying time — lines up in the same field as the athletes wearing national vests, runs the same certified course, and can contribute to Great Britain's official team result. This page explains exactly how that works, because the scoring rules are real, published, and worth understanding before you go.

THE COUNTRY RANKING, PLAINLY

HOW YOUR TIME COUNTS for Great Britain.

These are the official European Athletics rules for the mass-participation Country Ranking, from the championships regulations, translated out of rulebook language. There is a ranking for each race and each gender.

EVERY FINISHER IS ELIGIBLE

The ranking considers athletes by the country they are eligible to represent under World Athletics rules — in practice, the nationality you enter under. Elites and mass runners are scored together.

TOP 25 NET TIMES PER COUNTRY

For each race and each gender, the net finishing times of a country's fastest 25 runners — including its elite athletes — are added together into one aggregate.

LOWEST AGGREGATE WINS

The country with the lowest combined time wins the Country Ranking, and so on down the table. A tie goes to the country whose last scoring runner finished nearer the front.

25 OR NOTHING

A country with fewer than 25 finishers in a race is not classified at all — which is why every ordinary runner in a GB vest genuinely matters. Depth wins this format, not just speed.

WHAT THAT MEANS, in one sentence.

If you are one of Great Britain's 25 fastest finishers in your race and gender on the day — and in the mass field of a first-of-its-kind championships, you might be — your net time is added into Britain's official team total at a European Championships. Not symbolically. Arithmetically.

And even if you are the 26th fastest, or the 400th: the format only classifies countries that field 25 finishers, so simply being there, in the field, finishing, is what makes a British team result possible at all. I find that quietly moving. Running is mostly a private sport; for one weekend in April, it isn't.

Where to check the fine print: the full regulations are published by European Athletics (the Country Ranking rules sit from page 3 of the championships rulebook). Nothing here replaces them — this is the honest translation, confirmed with the Belgrade organisation.

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKEND, hour by hour.

Saturday 09:00European Half Marathon Championships — and the four-person relay alongside
Saturday 18:00European 10K Championships — an evening race through the falling light
Sunday 08:00European Marathon Championships — the 40th Belgrade Marathon itself
From 14 AprilRace expo — bib collection, and the last (most expensive) entry window

Two practical consequences worth planning around. First, you could race twice: the 10K on Saturday evening and nothing else, or a Saturday race as a shakeout spectator day before Sunday's marathon. Second, the evening 10K means Saturday dinner is late — which, in Belgrade, is not a problem so much as the natural order of things.

BRING YOUR CLUB

THE RELAY: four members, one time.

Alongside the half on Saturday morning runs a half marathon relay for teams of four — entry from £138 (€160) a team at the early wave, rising to £189 (€220). Split 21.1km four ways and nobody has to be a distance runner to be part of a European Championships weekend.

If you run with a club, this is the easiest sell you will ever make at a Tuesday session: a team trip, one entry fee between four, and a city at the other end that treats visiting runners like returning family. Relay pricing went live in stages — check the official site for the current window before you promise anyone anything.
