Everything a British runner tends to ask before a championships weekend in a city they have not visited — answered by someone who knows it well, with the honest catches listed rather than buried.
April here averages about 8°C at dawn and 18–20°C by mid-afternoon, with roughly twelve rain days in the month. Translation: an almost perfect race morning that can turn into a warm afternoon — dress for the start, plan for the finish.
Vest and shorts weather by 10am most years — but a throwaway layer for the 08:00 start.
A cap and sunglasses. April sun in the second half is the likelier problem, not rain.
Your own gels if you are particular — and nothing new on race day, championships or not.
For the Saturday 10K at 18:00: it cools fast when the sun drops behind Novi Beograd. Bring a layer for after.
Passport — UK citizens do not need a visa for a stay like this.
Your registration confirmation for the expo, on your phone and printed.
Travel insurance that covers running events.
Enter under your real nationality — it is a championships, and the name should match your passport.
Dinars for the kafana and the musicians — cards work almost everywhere else.
European two-pin plug, 230V.
Comfortable shoes for Kalemegdan's paths and Skadarlija's cobbles.
Room in the bag for what you'll bring back. Nobody leaves Belgrade lighter than they came.
Yes — that is the entire format. Open online entry, no ballot, no qualifying time, same course and weekend as the elite championships. How the scoring works →
If you are among GB's 25 fastest net times in your race and gender — possibly. And GB needs 25 finishers to be classified at all, so being there matters either way. Enter under your real nationality.
Friday. Bib collection is at the race expo (from 14 April), the half and relay start Saturday at 09:00, and you do not want to be solving a bib problem on race morning.
The Saturday half for the full occasion; the 18:00 10K for something almost no other city offers — racing into the evening, dinner after, Belgrade doing the rest. The relay if there are four of you.
By any ordinary European standard, yes — walk it with the same sense you would use anywhere. The genuine hazards are a kafana host's generosity and the third rakija.
No. English is widely spoken, especially by younger people, and race information is published in English. A hvala (thank you) and živeli (cheers) will open more doors than you expect.
Dinar (RSD), roughly 117 to the euro. Race fees are quoted in euros; the city runs in dinars; cards are near-universal. Carry some cash for musicians and markets.
Mid-April averages: 8°C dawns, 18–20°C afternoons, ~62mm of rain across ~12 days of the month. Perfect racing most years — with the occasional warm one, which is why the marathon starts at 08:00.
Ada Ciganlija — the flat 8km loop around the lake where the city itself trains. Or the Ušće riverside paths by the start. The city page has both →
More than any race on this site. Kalemegdan, Skadarlija, Ada, Avala, the rivers — and a city mid-transformation before EXPO 2027 opens the following month. Stay the Monday. Stay the Tuesday. I would.
Fees rise on published dates and championship details can be tuned before race week — confirm against the official site before booking. This guide gets a first-hand update from race weekend itself.
